What's in a name? That which we call a "therapist"...

So a couple of months ago, a client shared with me that when she speaks of me to friends, she calls me her "special friend." (I was given permission by the client to share the following story.) One day, she was relating to a friend what she had learned about herself in a recent session and her friend responded, "I wish I had a special friend!" How awesome is that?! Hahaha!

Another friend once said that while she isn't ashamed to see a therapist, she tends not to bring it up to others because saying that she "sees a therapist" feels cliche and yuppie. Has "seeing a therapist" gotten trendy? Has it joined the ranks of "wearing designer yoga gear," "hipsterdom," and "joining a CSA?" Then again, who really cares? What's great is that it feels like getting therapy is becoming more mainstream and less taboo, hurrah! Hopefully this means that more people are seeking help who need it than ever before!

Do you have a nickname for your therapist? Do you go to see your "aunt Mildred" every Wednesday at 2 o'clock? I love that I'm someone's "special friend," don't you? :)

PS A friend just read my post and commented, "In LA, it would be 'seeing my psychic.'" I got a chuckle out of that one, haha!
