Training Update

Don't want to leave you all hanging! Since my last blog post, the running has gotten back on track and today (drum roll please!), I ran 7 miles!

Annapolis Ten Mile Run 2010
Now it wasn't all sugar and spice and everything nice. My knees are hurting right now; evidence, I think, that I haven't been training perfectly consistently lately, but I'm okay with that because though my legs were nearing deadness, I think I could have run at least another mile. I'm running this race for the fun and fitness but also, for vindication. Why, you ask?

Back in 2005, I signed up for the Army Ten Miler with a few friends. I had just moved to Washington, DC from New York and wasn't quite accustomed to the heat and humidity. (Who am I kidding, I'm still not used to it!) So, I'll admit, I slacked a bit and started the race not in the best of shape. But I was going to give it the good old college try anyway. I was jogging along, enjoying it as much as I could when after a while, something seemed to be off. As I was chugging along, I kept expecting the next mile marker to be just around the corner because surely, it had been a mile already. Not until 15 minutes had gone by did I finally see the Mile 7 marker which of course sent my confidence into a nosedive. And then I didn't see Mile 8 at all. I started hearing murmurings from the people jogging along around me that we had already passed the 10 mile mark. WTF?! Finally I crossed the finish line and learned that the Army Ten Miler had become the Army 11.2 Miler that year because of a suspicious backpack that was found under one of the bridges along the race route. DC police were called in and the race was diverted mid-stride essentially cancelling the 2005 ATM as the race route was no longer valid. Oof. That sucked.

So hopefully this year, the day will dawn sunny and cool. (cross your fingers) I'll head to the starting line confident in my training and no suspicious packages will be found en route. (Please God) And I'll have a smiling picture to post of me crossing the finish line! (I love fans, come out and cheer me on!)

  2. I've ran it the last two years and though it was cool at the start (freezing, actually), it was about 85 once the sun came out. See my pictures here: http://irunyourun.wordpress.com/2010/10/25/army-ten-miler-report/ We're all pretty sweaty at the end! It was HOT, so dress accordingly :)
